Most of us have lived with some level of fear for so long we find it a natural aspect of life.  While we can try and pretend living with fear is “normal,” the truth is, we are living in self-made prisons that bar us from the life we deserve.

Fear is a powerful emotion that stops us from becoming the best versions of ourselves. Fear feeds complacency and keeps us from recognizing our own potential and taking advantage of opportunities that present themselves.

But you don’t have to let fear win. As long as you are alive there is still time left on the clock to beat this unworthy opponent. Here are some ways you can overcome fear to create the life you love.

  1. Understand What Fear is

A good majority of the fear we experience on a daily basis is irrational. It is simply our own mind attempting to protect us from pain. To begin to overcome fear, it’s important to recognize it for what it is. Begin to think about the fears you have. Write them down and see which, if any, are rational and which are irrational.

  1. Empower Yourself with Meditation

Meditation is a great tool for connecting with your true self, true potential, and true power. If you’ve never meditated before, don’t be intimidated. It’s really quite simple once you’ve practiced it for a bit. There are many ways to meditate, so do a bit of research and experiment until you find what works best for you. By learning to still your mind you will be able to still unnecessary negative thoughts that pop in throughout the day.

  1. Practice Self-Care

How we think of ourselves determines what kind of life we allow ourselves to have. Those of us with self-esteem issues or who feel we must constantly put others’ needs first tend to allow fear to rob us of life satisfaction.

Begin to practice self-care by putting your own well-being first. Take care of yourself by exercising, eating right, and saying “no” to others more often. By taking better care of yourself, you signal to your subconscious that you are worthy of a life you love, and soon your mind will stop sending you so many irrational signals to fear something in an effort to hold you back.

  1. Look for the Good in Your Life

One of the best ways to obliterate fear is to focus your mind on joy. You can’t feel fear and joy at the same time, it’s as impossible as juggling while doing a handstand.

Begin to look more at all of the good in your life. See the beauty in the relationships you have with your friends and family. Appreciate your good health, natural abilities, and all of the material wealth you may have. The more time you think of the good in your life, the less attention and power you give to fear.

  1. Use Your Imagination for Good

The human imagination is a powerful creative tool. When we imagine the life we really want completely… when we can put ourselves right there in our minds and see, smell, taste, and feel what that ideal life looks, smells, tastes and feels like, then we begin the almost mystical process of manifestation.

Most people use their imaginations in destructive ways. They imagine the worst-case scenarios. They imagine things going wrong and themselves screwing up.

But here’s the thing, your subconscious does not know the difference between “reality” outside of your mind, and what goes on in your imagination. There are many studies that prove this phenomena.

For example, there have been studies that had one group of people actually exercise and another group of people only exercise in their imaginations and at the end of the study, both groups saw almost the exact same level of increase in fitness! While we may not know exactly how imagining exercise can manifest actual physical gains, what we can take from these studies is that the imagination seems to be more than what we currently believe it to be.

So, stop using yours to imagine the worst happening and start using it to imagine the BEST happening.

Your life can be anything you want it to be. That is not a woo-woo new age-y sentiment, it is a fact. Getting out of your comfort zone and facing your fears won’t necessarily be easy, but you are so worth the effort. By following these tips you will be able to stop imprisoning yourself and start living a life you love.
