Know Your Chakras Series Part 6: The Third Eye Chakra {Ajna}

The center of your intuition resides here, which can guide you to higher states of consciousness or start the process of becoming enlightened. Located right between the eyebrows this can also be referred to as your brow chakra. The element associated with the Third Eye is light. When you are balanced you have a strong intuition, exceptional memory, and can absorb new information easily. You know that you have the power to create your own reality and use the law of attraction to your advantage. You can be empathetic without feeling drained, be perceptive, and imaginative. You know that everything is connected in the world. Your life is in balance. When practicing focus on your Drishti – or your gazing point, this outward vision lock can bring inner awareness. Quite often if our eyes are darting around the room or are unfocused so is our practice. 

A blocked chakra is common with those who are indecisive or fear commitment. Not listening to your instincts or feeling that you have no purpose in life can also block this chakra. Those who fear religion quite often shut this area down, as they are not open to the possibility of spiritual guidance. Overactivity is seen in those with high stress levels that physically can manifest as headaches or migraines. Individuals with over activity tend to be judgmental, unsympathetic, or overly-intellectual while thinking. These are the types of people who are constantly in their heads. Physically the energy in this area affects the brain, pituitary gland and the pineal gland. Headaches and migraines are the most common physical complaint but it can manifest as tumors, cysts, strokes, seizures, insomnia, depression, addiction, nausea or the loss of a sense at a more severe level.

Some things to try on to help open and unblock your third eye chakra are:

  • Feed your brain. Dark chocolate, fish oil, avocado, olive oil, coconut oil. There are plenty of tasty ways to get some healthy fats to your noggin.
  • Play games! Your brain responds to games remarkably well. Popular games are Sudoku, crossword puzzles, word games, and memory games. Best part, most smart phones have free game apps you can use. 
  • Invite some indigo into your life. Hang a purple painting, wear amethyst, and use lavender daily. There are some great new prints from the fall collection at Inner Fire such as the Element, Feather, and Flora leggings. I have been drawn to purple the past few years, its such an easy color to wear. 
  • Keep a dream journal. It could be as simple as a pen and paper beside the bed and jotting down a few points you remember about your dreams. Apply your own personal dream decoding to your dreams and see what you come up with.
  • Perform eye exercises. This is especially beneficial to those who are looking at screens for a long period of time. The eyes may fatigue fast, but this is a muscle and just like any other muscle needs to be worked in order to stay strong and healthy. Give you eyes a rest afterwards with an eye covering. I like to keep it simple and heat a washcloth in warm water with a few drops of lavender and rose oil. This is great to use in savasana or while meditating lying down. 

Some questions to journal or discuss with a friend or partner:

  • Do I tend to over analyze events from the past? 
  • Am I a competitive person with myself or with others?
  • Am I able to pick up intuitive information and follow that guidance?
  • Am I judgmental? Do I give myself excuses for acting negatively? 
  • What am I willing to give up to get what I want?

  • Forearm balance/dolphin plank
