You know that empty answer we give half-heartedly to our friends, family, and sometimes even ourselves when we don’t want to say yes or no? Yeah, that word. Maybe.
This is the word we use to say “kinda” or “not sure” which ends up leaving whatever decision we need to make in that moment just swinging away in the wind. Well I have a challenge for the month of May for all my fellow BE-ings. What if our “maybe” decisions were thought of as what “will be.” I know that sounds weird when you read it, but just visualize it! We can actually improve our lives by removing the word “maybe” from our vocabulary.
Maybe is a half yes and half no, which ultimately is indecision to commit to either. Yeah, I believe in no expectations, what may be, will be, but maybe is still a decision. One I don’t think does anyone any good. Just imagine with me for a second if we lived our lives using maybe for daily decisions, with the intent to “maybe” anything. Phrases like “Maybe I’ll talk to that cute guy,” or “Maybe I will go to yoga tonight” come into mind. Do you see a decision? I do. If you don’t, let me explain…Maybe should not be one word, it should be two.
Maybe is defined as: perhaps or possibly. We use ma ybe and may be to talk about possibility. They are often confused, because we use them both when we think that something is possible, but we are not certain. But what about when we are in charge of that certainty? 9 times out of 10 maybe turns into a No. Doesn’t surprise me.
What if we held ourselves responsible or accountable for turning that maybe into a “Yes I AM going to that date,” or “No I AM not going to miss yoga class.” Many decisions we contemplate on a daily basis we actually already know the answer to. So why do we say maybe? Is it because we don’t want to give an answer? We don’t want to disappoint others by saying no, but instead keep them guessing? Is it because we don’t want to commit in case we change our minds? Well that’s just silly! We change our minds 100 times a day! I’d rather have someone tell me No a thousand times over a maybe. That’s what I call no expectations, because now we aren’t waiting around expecting you to decide! Time is precious, so be someone confident in daily life decisions.
As May the 4 th (force) has passed, I am reminded of Yoda’s quote from Stars Wars (go nuts everybody) “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” I want you to not try, but DO something for this month of May, say yes or no. Make a commitment to that decision and follow through. You owe it to yourself, your friends, and family. You will be shocked at the results when “maybe” will slowly be used less and less and the confidence in yourself and your decisions will soar. You know what you want, admit it. Start there, because that IS up to you. May the BE, be with you.
It’s really important that we fuel our bodies the right way and boost our mood and energy naturally instead of turning to caffeine and sugar-filled snacks. While they might give you a temporary hit, they won’t do your body any good in the long run; they will only slow you down and leave you even more tired!
