Goin' bhakti basics at Kirtan Vancouver 2012

August 20, 2012

Wow, this summer sure has flown by super fast. The last time I blogged was a month ago! Geeez! So needless to say, I am due to post! Partly why I’ve been MIA this month is because I’ve been really busy preparing for my first ever festival, Kirtan Vancouver 2012. It happened this past Saturday at beautiful Second Beach, Stanley Park, Vancouver. This place really brought back memories – I remember playing on the old fire truck and going for bike rides as a kid.

This was my first time attending the event and I have to say it was a total blast! There were so many colorful booths set up with all sorts of cool vendors – everything from vegan foods to hippie wear to organic products. I really felt honoured to be accepted as one of the exhibitors. There was a huge stage set up with performances going on all day. For those of you who don’t know what “Kirtan” is, it’s devotional call and response chanting. Check out the Wikipedia link here if you want to read up on it more. I tried it for the first time last year at my Moksha Yoga teacher training and had a blast. It’s a form of Bhakti or devotional yoga. Some say it is the fastest way to reach enlightenment. I wouldn’t doubt it. When people say singing and chanting help to raise the vibration of the space, they’re not lying. Seeing so many people dance and sing along just made me so happy. Who cares if you don’t know what you’re chanting or if you look weird jumping around to it. People were definitely vibing at this event and it was a beautiful thing to see. I wish I could have seen more of it but my booth was set up behind the stage. However, the bonus was that we always had great music to vibe to throughout the day.

So as I said, this was my first event and it was definitely a learning experience getting everything ready. I had a huge checklist of all the stuff I had to bring. I am pretty happy to say that I didn’t forget anything major! It also really helped that I had a couple wonderful people help me out. First off, my trusty boyfriend Russ helped me with his Tetris magic to get everything to fit into my little sedan. He also drove us down and picked us up. I also wouldn’t have been able to do it without my friend Taylor who was there the whole day with me. She also sold some of her sweet tie-dye ( http://www.taydye.ca/). Her stuff was a hit!  I’m happy to say that I sold enough to not lose any money and to buy a nice celebration dinner afterwards. Woo woot! All in all, it was a rad experience. It was great to meet so many different people throughout the day. I even reconnected with some old friends and even distant family members who were visiting for the weekend. You never know who you’ll run into. I’ll definitely be back again next year.

Here are some photos from the event:
